Coalfield Development Corporation: Capacity Built, Project Complete

June 10, 2015

Coalfield Development Corporation (CDC) in Wayne, WV recently graduated from the Appalachian Coal Country Team. The project site’s second year OSMRE/VISTA Ryan Devine completed his term in May 2015. Throughout his term, Ryan worked closely with CDC’s Quality Jobs Initiative (QJI) program, interacting with and documenting the success of the program’s members.

Building on his education in Film & Media Arts, Ryan interviewed QJI members at work to create a video for CDC’s website. The video highlights a program which currently has ten members in Wayne and Mingo Counties, and that recently saw two graduates find jobs in the local community - one with a contractor and another with a fine woodworking business, both contacts that were made through QJI.

Ryan also created a KickStarter Campaign online to fund CDC’s new project, Trout’s Hill Coffee Shop. This coffee shop will be WV’s first low-income housing tenant-operated coffee shop. The online campaign reached and surpassed its goal of $10,000, Ryan sees this as the greatest accomplishment of his term. Renovations funded by the Kickstarter campaign are underway.

After two years of ACCT service in Wayne with the CDC, the VISTA project has successfully built organizational capacity through fundraising, outreach, and project development, empowering the CDC in its mission: to be a community based organization that provides quality and affordable homes, creates quality jobs, and generates opportunities for quality life for low income families in southern West Virginia.
