The Gunnison Valley Regional Housing Authority’s mission is to advocate, promote, plan and provide a long-term supply of desirable and affordable housing in Gunnison County in order to maintain a well-rounded community.

The Gunnison Valley Housing Foundation’s mission is to work co-operatively to support the development and maintenance of affordable, accessible, and energy efficient housing using renewable and locally available resources as much as possible to contribute to sustainable, livable and healthy communities within the Gunnison Valley.

About the Surrounding Community

Soon after the Crested Butte mining camp was incorporated, the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company and its predecessors developed coal mines and coke ovens, making the Crested Butte area Colorado’s leading mountain coal operation by 1882. This is the same area served by the Gunnison Valley Regional Housing Authority, where much of the private land of Gunnison County is located along the riparian corridor of the Lake Fork Valley. Most of the land is divided into large acreage properties and ranches. Over the past two decades, a few subdivisions (5 to 20 acre lots) have been developed, and some ranches have been subdivided into smaller tracts with a minimum of 35 acres, indicating that the area is increasing in development.

Project Overview

To provide economic opportunities, the OSMRE/VISTA assists in the development of a 30-unit low-income housing property called Anthracite Place by researching environmentally sound construction alternatives to further the argument for Enterprise Green over LEED-certified construction, thereby creating lasting, sustainable, and affordable housing for low-income residents of Gunnison County who otherwise lack housing options where they work and commute 60 miles daily to a rugged environment. The OSMRE/VISTA assists in housing revitalization/modernization through the low-income rehabilitation program by creating partnerships with regional funding partners to create a funding stream for retrofit projects in the Gunnison Valley. These retrofit projects will ensure that safe and affordable housing is provided to households in need, especially in a challenging high-altitude climate. To promote environmental stewardship, the project devises a Housing Rehabilitation 5-year Plan and Efficiency Goals in order to provide definitive guidelines for the program to target low-income households and energy-efficiency in ageing, sub-standard housing stock.
