The West End Economic Development Corporation’s (WEEDC) mission is to create and encourage an inviting, pro-business environment, integrated with their independent spirit and friendly culture, while capitalizing on their natural and historic resources.
About the Surrounding Community
The West End of Montrose County has a strong mining history that has resulted in a cycle of boom and bust economies with no viable, large scale regional employers since the closing of the Vanadium Corporation of America Naturita Mill and Uravan mills, with the exception of a coal power plant and coal surface mines that still operate today. The average per capita income of the zip codes served by West End Economic Development Corporation is 15.13% below the national average; 13.8% of the residents living in these zip codes live below the national poverty level.
The project focuses on a three-fold approach to economic development through the creation of a diverse economic approach that will reduce the community’s dependence on a single company or industry by promoting the development of small businesses and entrepreneurs, retention of existing businesses, and recruitment of additional primary jobs. The OSMRE/VISTA coordinates projects and initiatives between existing community organizations and the local town and county governments; researches incentives and other economic drivers to bring to the West End; provides technical assistance to partners engaged in fundraising and grant writing; develops pro-business initiatives and referendums for local governments to consider and adopt; creates educational curriculum to support internships and mentorships with business professionals; manages existing projects focused on community and economic development; and develops new projects that fit within the strategic plan of the West End Economic Development Center (WEEDC).
